The Heartbeat of Peranakan Culture

Nestled in the coastal side of the east lies a vibrant neighbourhood, rich with Peranakan history. Peranakan, which translates to "local born," are descendants of Chinese or Indian immigrants who married indigenous people from the Malay Archipelago in the 15th century.

 

While some cultures of Peranakan differ from one another, language is what they have in common. Fluent in English, the Peranakans also speak Baba Malay, a hybrid of Malay language with Hokkien words and phrases. Unfortunately, much of the Peranakan culture faded after the war but here in Katong, their legacy lives on.

 

Katong's synonymity with the Peranakan goes as far back to the early 20th century. The Peranakan influence in architecture is visible in the rows of shop houses and the cuisine, where some Peranakan restaurants and cafes are still thriving, thanks to their hybrid of influences comprising Chinese, Malay, Indian, Thai, and Western. Aromatic and sentimental, the food usually has ingredients that reflect their diversified origins. What makes their cuisine even more unique is that their food varies regionally, reflecting influences of the geographical location of each community. Therefore, no two foods are the same. Peranakan cuisine is indeed the original fusion.

 

As one of the most distinctive aspects of the Peranakan culture, their cuisine continues to flourish until today where people from all over the world come to visit not just to enjoy the food but also to learn more about the Peranakan lifestyle and heritage, taking pieces of the culture and memories home with them.
